Description
Sterile Schirmer tests are single-use medical devices used in ophthalmology to assess tear production. Made from Whatman filter paper No. 41, these diagnostic strips are precisely graduated in millimeters and individually packed to ensure sterility. They come in a black and white design and do not include a color indicator, allowing for objective measurement of tear secretion.
Key Features:
• Made from Whatman filter paper No. 41;
• Millimeter gradations for accurate reading;
• Individually packed and sterile;
• Colorless test strips (no dye or indicator);
• Color: black and white;
• Single-use diagnostic test.
Medical Applications:
Schirmer tests are used in ophthalmology to quantitatively assess tear production:
• Schirmer I – measures total tear production (baseline + reflex), without anesthesia;
• Schirmer II – measures only baseline secretion after topical anesthesia.
Instructions for Use:
A1. For Schirmer I – do not apply topical medications or perform any manipulation before testing.
A2. For Schirmer II – instill local anesthetic twice, wait 2–3 minutes, then clean the eyelid margin and surrounding skin, especially the temporal area where the strip will be placed.
B. Seat the patient with head supported, and dim the lights.
C. Fold the strip at the zero (0 mm) gradation line.
D. Open the pouch to release the strip, which has a rounded end pre-folded at 0 mm.
E. With the patient looking up, gently pull down the lower eyelid and insert the rounded end of the strip into the conjunctival sac near the outer corner of the eye, gradations facing upward. Keep the eye closed during the test.
F. Wait 5 minutes, then remove the strip and measure the length of the wet area.
Interpretation of Results:
• Schirmer I:
– 15–25 mm: normal total secretion;
– 10–15 mm: early dysfunction;
– 6–10 mm: moderate dysfunction;
– 2–5 mm: severe dysfunction;
– <2 mm: near-total dryness.
• Schirmer II:
– ≥15 mm: normal baseline secretion;
– 10–15 mm: mild dysfunction;
– 6–10 mm: moderate dysfunction;
– 1–5 mm: severe dysfunction;
– <2 mm: near-total dryness.
